Hybrid World Adelaide is a new technology festival that starts today in Adelaide. It runs from 4 – 8 October with a variety of events including an industry conference and public events.
There’s no denying our lives have become heavily digital and reliant upon technology. This event will showcase aspects of the future including biotech, gaming, cybersecurity, drones, artificial intelligence, and robots.
Whether you’re a digital native at home in the virtual world, or curious to see how technology impacts your life and the world around you, you’ll find something fascinating in Hybrid World.
The conference
The conference kicks off on Wednesday 4 October before a full day of panel discussions and presentations with international and local speakers.
One of the highlights includes Prof Hiroshi Ishiguro, you may recognise his face – the difference is whether or not it’s his humanoid robot copy or the real person! He’ll be talking about the potential of a robot society in the not too distant future. He’ll also present a free talk at the public event on Thursday.

One of the other fascinating speakers is US synthetic biologist Andrew Hessel who is doing fascinating work with the human genome. We have the chance to speak to him recently, check out his interview.
It wouldn’t be an event about all things future without local Adelaide futurist and director of MOD., Kristin Alford. You can learn about MOD. as they document the creation of their museum of discovery.

The public events
From Friday 6 – Sunday 8 October, the public are invited to explore, discover, learn and immerse themselves into all things digital!
If you’re a fan of online gaming, you’ve probably heard of League of Legends. With over 100 million players worldwide, you can join in the Gaming Stage on Friday and Saturday where there’ll be a LAN party with 50 networked computers!
The Gaming Stage will also host other games on the other days, including the popular Minecraft.
Zoom your way into the competitive world of drone racing. In the Drone Zone, come see top drone racers from across the country compete for prizes and glory, and open your eyes to a whole new world.
Sign up to lessons with She Flies. This drone education program was founded by women scientists, eager to boost confidence and conversation around gender equality in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Want to immerse into the future through sci-fi? Well, you certainly want to check out Zedtown on Saturday, a full-on zombie apocalypse game. Zombie science has some found science, as our Contributing Editor for Culture wrote about here – and who knows, you might pick up some hints! Sorry kids, this one is 18+.
