What are some of the roles when working in Earth Sciences? Jing has made an unexpected career as an image specialist in triangulation – she originally wanted to work as a herbal doctor, but her studies at university changed her mind and now she loves what she does and couldn’t imagine not being in that role. Kelly works as a Geologist for a Mineral Exploration company – a modern day explorer here in Australia. She didn’t really know what she wanted to do when she left school so started off doing both general Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degrees, but then found her passion for rocks and specialised in Geology from her second year. Follow Kelly as she talks about the perks and highs of her role, and how her understanding of the world around us gives such rewards.

For Kathryn working as a marine biologist is a bit like being in school still, in that she gets to do science experiments as part of her job, and she sees just how relevant on a day to day level her studies are to her role now. She says the highlights of her work include job variety, getting paid to scuba, and the flexibility of the job.

Shirley’s job revolves around discovering and studying new sponges, that might hold the key to developing new medicines for hard to cure illnesses. Stephen is a Research Fellow working in Sustainable buildings, and talks about not only his own role, but how that fits into benefiting the entire planet as a whole. He learnt that his job is as much about collaborating with other people and developing communication skills as it has been ‘being a scientist’. He didn’t realise that a scientist’s work could be involved in working out how to make the houses we live in greener, more energy efficient and cheaper to live in but was driven by a desire to make a difference to people’s lives.
