Have you ever wondered what it means for the birth of new stars when galaxies collide?
This animation highlights some research showing that when galaxies of different sizes meet in space, star formation in the smaller galaxy slows down for the smaller galaxy and increases for the larger galaxy. If the galaxies are the same mass however, they both form lots of new stars.
The data is from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) Survey.
